A prominent son of Nimba County, Printiss Domah, has publicly criticized ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) for what he describes as superficial roadwork being carried out in Yekepa ahead of a scheduled visit by President Joseph Boakai.
Domah, in a statement shared on social media, alleged that AML is “patching potholes” in a last-minute attempt to improve the appearance of roads in its concession area. He further claimed the company requested the President’s visit be postponed from May 27 to June 16, 2025, to allow more time for the repairs.
“Yekepa is the host area of AML’s concession activities of iron ores and other natural resources, earning them billions of dollars annually,” Domah noted, questioning why basic infrastructure remains in poor condition despite the company’s economic gains.
The remarks come amid AML’s ongoing efforts to secure an extension and expansion of its Mineral Development Agreement with the Liberian government. The company is seeking to increase its iron ore production from 5 million to 15 million metric tons annually.
This year, ArcelorMittal marks 20 years of operations in Liberia, but Domah suggests the anniversary is being accompanied by an intensified public relations campaign. He accuses the company of using influential media figures to spread “black lies” about its contributions to Nimba County and other areas.
As the President’s rescheduled visit approaches, local sentiment appears to be growing increasingly critical of what some residents view as performative gestures rather than long-term development efforts. AML has not yet publicly responded to Domah’s accusations.
