U.S. Ambassador Mark Toner Emphasizes Youth Empowerment and Economic Development in Liberia

GBARNGA — In a significant outreach effort, the Ambassador of the United States to Liberia, Mark Toner, has underscored the critical role of youth empowerment and economic development in the nation. His remarks came during a courtesy visit to Bong County Superintendent Madam Loleyah Hawa Norris on June 17, 2025 where he reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to supporting Liberia in these crucial areas.

Immediately following an indoor meeting with local authorities, Ambassador Toner spoke to journalists, expressing the need for his office to extend its reach beyond the capital, Monrovia. He emphasized that understanding the realities faced by residents in rural communities is vital to addressing the country’s challenges effectively.

“I won’t learn anything about the problems facing Liberia or the opportunities unless I get outside of Monrovia,” Toner explained. “Traveling to places like Bong County and Gbarnga allows me to engage with community leaders and gain first-hand insight into the issues that matter most to the people.”

Ambassador Toner also reflected on the enduring relationship between Liberia and the United States, emphasizing a commitment to a mutually beneficial partnership. He noted that sustainable change cannot occur unless there is genuine investment from the local population. “People can come in and bring money and assistance, but without the buy-in of the local community, you won’t achieve sustainability,” he stated. “The superintendent is trying to build that investment in the community, and we are dedicated to fostering a long-term relationship focused on growth.”

Superintendent Norris expressed her gratitude to Ambassador Toner for his visit and highlighted the necessity of training opportunities for young people to drive economic development in the county. She acknowledged the importance of empowering youth as a means to achieve broader economic goals.

Additionally, Madam Norris urged residents of Bong County to prioritize holistic community development over personal gain. She reassured the citizens of her commitment to serve in the best interest of all residents and to foster the growth of the county as a whole. “Together, we can build a sustainable future that benefits every Bongese,” she asserted.

This visit by Ambassador Toner reflects a broader strategy to enhance cooperation between the U.S. and Liberia, particularly in sectors that directly impact the country’s youth and economic landscape. His observations and discussions in Bong County are expected to inform ongoing U.S. support initiatives aimed at empowering young people and facilitating economic growth across Liberia.

The U.S. Ambassador’s statements come at a time when crucial U S aid has been suspended across multiple African countries, including Liberia, and a plan from the U.S. to impose travail bans on African countries with Liberia listed on such a list.
