Ex-Finance Minister Commends Senator Konneh for Honest, Data-Driven Politics

Monrovia– Former Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr. has hailed Senator Amara M. Konneh of Gbapolu County for what he described as “a bold and honest stance” in Liberia’s increasingly polarized political arena.

In a public statement, Tweah commended Senator Konneh for advancing a new model of what he called “honest politicking”-a rare and refreshing departure, he says, from the entrenched of misinformation that characterizes Liberian politics.

Independent thinking, bravery, and honesty are the ingredients truly missing to forge a new genre of politics,” Tweah noted. “Mr. Senator, you have stepped up as a leader in this new field.”

Highlighting a key point of praise, Tweah emphasized Konneh’s reliance on economic data, a practice the former minister says is sorely lacking among most Liberian politicians.

Because most politicians do not understand macroeconomic numbers, they do not like to quote them,” Tweah said. “So our politics is riddled with lies.

As more senators, representatives, and appointed officials begin to interpret numbers for our people, I believe lies will be more effectively countered.”

Macroeconomic Legacy Defended

In defending the record of the previous Congress for Democratic Change (CDC)-led government, under which he served, Tweah asserted that the Unity Party (UP) administration inherited a solid macroeconomic foundation.

“It is an unassailable fact,” he declared. “Poverty was declining, growth was increasing, net international reserves were higher than what CDC inherited, and inflation was lower.”

Using recent data from the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS), Tweah pointed out that consumer prices rose 12.48% between January 2024 and June 2025.

If something cost LD$100 under the CDC, it now costs LD$112.48 under the Unity Party. This is a fact,” he said. “The UP should use this fact and apply the same macroeconomic strategies, or even better ones, than the CDC used to achieve the stability Senator Konneh referenced.”

A Call to Continue National Projects

Tweah also highlighted ongoing education projects launched during the CDC administration, particularly the construction of 87 public schools, 25 of which are high schools, funded through the World Bank.

He urged the Unity Party-led government to complete and dedicate these facilities and shift its focus to addressing quality issues in Liberia’s education sector.

Now that the CDC administration has addressed some major quantity milestones, the UP administration should turn its focus to addressing quality,” he said. “This is how the CDC-UP governance alternation can move Liberia forward.”

A Broader Message

For Tweah, Konneh’s willingness to transcend party lines and focus on substantive, evidence-based discussion represents a much-needed transformation in national discourse.

Senator Konneh is telling us to leave party sentiments aside and focus on these big issues, allowing the economic and development numbers to speak for themselves,” he concluded. “For his bravery, we all owe him a huge debt of public gratitude.”
