UMC Liberia: Lifting of Prohibition Does Not Grant Property Rights to GMC

By Mariama Jalloh, contributor

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (UMC) has cautioned the Global Methodist Church (GMC) and its associates that the recent lifting of a prohibition order does not grant them legal rights to occupy the Ganta United Methodist Mission properties in Nimba County.

The warning follows a decision by Justice in Chambers, Associate Justice Yusuf Kaba, who denied the UMC’s request for a stay order against the GMC concerning the use of the Ganta United Methodist Mission Station in Ganta City.

The ruling has generated mixed reactions, with GMC members reportedly celebrating the outcome ahead of their upcoming conference in Gompa, Nimba County.

Despite the court’s decision, the UMC said the matter remains before the judiciary and is still subject to final determination.

The UMC leaders emphasized that the ruling does not affect the declaratory judgment case currently on appeal before the Supreme Court.

In a press statement issued Tuesday, the UMC reaffirmed that the Ganta United Methodist Mission properties remain under its ownership and authority.

The church further stated that any individual or institution wishing to use its facilities in Ganta must follow established procedures approved by the United Methodist Church.
