Guinea’s main opposition leader Cellou Diallo calls for ‘direct resistance’ after Pres. Doumbouya dissolved 40 political parties

The leading opposition leader in Guinea, Mr. Cellou Dalein Diallo, has amplified calls for “direct resistance” against junta-leader-turned president Mamady Doumbouya, after his governemnt dissolved 40 registered political parties in Guinea.

Doumbouya’s regime said the dissolved political parties were not in complaince with the law, an accusation that the parties have since refuted.

The widely-crictized decision to dissolve the parties, which some analysts described a crackdown on dissent and democracy, comes just in less than three months after the junta leader was inaugurated as a civilian president on January 17, 2026, following a ban on major presidential contenders from participating.

The 41-year-old ex-junta leader, who now serves as the fifth president of Guinea since October 1, 2021, came to power after leading a coup d’état on September 5, 2021 that toppled president Alpha Condé.
