By G. Watson Richards

Judge Serena F. Garlawolu of the 8th Judicial Circuit Court in Sanniquellie, Nimba County, has handed down a decisive ruling, ordering AFCONS, a subcontractor of Arcelor Mittal, to compensate a 39-year-old worker, Emmanuel Z. David, who lost his right leg in what appeared to be a negligible accident on the part of the company.

The judge has ordered the immediate compensation of US$400,000 (L$73.5 million, current exchange rate) to the victim or the company risks closure and seizure of properties. The latest ruling in favor of Emmanuel David marks a decisive victory against poor safety standards across concession companies, especially mining companies, in Liberia.

This is a developing story. More details to follow.
