Monrovia, Liberia — A visit by Czech-based content creator David Akhundzada turned confrontational on Saturday after he was reportedly attacked while filming a garbage accumulation point on Center Street, sparking debate over sanitation conditions and press freedom in the capital.
The incident, captured in a video now circulating widely on social media, shows Akhundzada documenting heaps of waste in what he described as a “dumpster side” of the city. He was confronted by a security officer believed to be attached to the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), leading to a heated exchange.
In the footage, the vlogger questions why he is being prevented from filming in what he considers a public space. Tensions escalated when he reportedly attempted to access a restricted section of the site, prompting intervention from MCC security personnel. Portions of the video suggest verbal hostility and confusion, with both sides accusing each other of misconduct.
City Authorities Respond
In a statement issued Sunday, the MCC confirmed the altercation but rejected claims of deliberate harassment, describing the situation as a “procedural breach” related to restricted access rules.
According to the city government, the Center Street location functions as a temporary garbage holding site with limited public access due to health and safety concerns.
“Restricting pedestrian access to garbage disposal sites provides critical public health benefits by mitigating hazards and reducing disease transmission,” the statement said.
Authorities also emphasized that both local and foreign content creators are required to obtain authorization before filming in designated operational zones.
Contrasting Narratives
Earlier footage recorded by Akhundzada the same day presents a different perspective of Monrovia. In widely shared clips, he praised the city’s organization and cleanliness, stating:
“The streets are actually really organized — your city is pretty clean in comparison to other capitals.”
This contrast has fueled mixed reactions among residents. While some defend recent sanitation improvements, others argue the confrontation highlights broader concerns about transparency and accountability.
The incident has triggered strong responses across social media, with calls for professionalism among security personnel and respect for lawful authority by visitors.
Civil society groups are urging calm, stressing the importance of balancing freedom of expression with public safety regulations.
Tourism and Image at Stake
The MCC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Monrovia as a tourist-friendly destination while cautioning against actions that could “portray a skewed image” of the city.
At the same time, the corporation reiterated its zero tolerance for violence or intimidation against foreign nationals, indicating that internal reviews may follow.
As investigations continue, the Center Street confrontation highlights growing tensions in Monrovia’s evolving urban narrative—where digital storytelling, governance, and public perception increasingly intersect on a global stage.
