President Boakai Responds to Critics after Receiving Global Peace Honor

By Myean D Torgbean

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has returned to Liberia following his recognition at the Africa Annual Peace Awards in Sacramento, California, an event officials say adds to the country’s growing international visibility.

The award recognizes his efforts toward peace, reconciliation, and national stability, which his supporters describe as an encouraging milestone for Liberia on the global stage.

Speaking briefly to journalists upon arrival at Roberts International Airport, President Boakai responded to criticism from opposition figures who have questioned the relevance of the honor.

When asked about suggestions that the recognition does not directly address the daily struggles of Liberians, he reacted pointedly.

“I just want you to repeat the word opposition,” Boakai said. “What do you expect of them?”

His comment has since drawn mixed reactions, reflecting ongoing political disagreements over the importance of international awards in relation to domestic challenges.

Honored in California

During his visit, President Boakai was also recognized at an academic reception held at the historic Julia Morgan House in Sacramento.

The event, hosted by Luke Wood, brought together officials of California State University, faculty members, Liberian community leaders, and members of the President’s delegation.

He was presented with full academic honors and a commemorative plaque in recognition of his leadership in promoting peace and unity.

In his remarks, Wood commended Boakai’s leadership and efforts toward strengthening democratic governance and national cohesion.

Strengthening Global Ties

President Boakai described the recognition as a reflection of Liberia’s expanding engagement with international partners.

“This honor reflects Liberia’s commitment to peace and our willingness to collaborate globally,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of building stronger partnerships with academic institutions, particularly in areas such as education, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.

Government officials say the visit highlights Liberia’s efforts to deepen international relationships and improve its global standing.

Despite the recognition abroad, the award has sparked debate in Liberia, with some opposition voices questioning its relevance amid economic and social challenges.

Supporters, however, argue that such honors help improve the country’s image, attract partnerships, and strengthen confidence in leadership.

Many Liberians noted that while international awards may not directly impact daily conditions, they can influence perception and open opportunities for cooperation and investment.
