Court Bars Former Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs from Overseas Travel in Alleged Corruption Case

Criminal Court “C” at the first judicial circuit court in Montserrado County has prevented former Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs from traveling abroad for medical treatment as she remains under investigation in connection with an alleged corruption case involving nearly half a million United States dollars and millions of Liberian dollars.

The decision follows the rejection of Diggs’ medical travel request by the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce (AREPT), which instead requested an independent local medical assessment as ordered by the court.

According to authorities, Diggs is among eight individuals indicted in relation to the alleged mismanagement of US$493,669.38 and L$190.3 million earmarked for Rural Empowerment Funds.

The accused have been charged with multiple offenses, including theft of property, economic sabotage, misapplication of entrusted property, and criminal conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege that the funds were improperly handled, prompting an investigation and subsequent indictment of those linked to the case.

The court’s decision means Diggs will remain in Liberia pending the outcome of the independent medical evaluation and ongoing legal proceedings.

The case continues to draw public attention as authorities pursue efforts to recover allegedly misappropriated public funds. This version is suitable for newspaper publication and remains under 200 words.
