GREENVILLE, Sinoe County – After years of anticipation and hope, residents of Greenville City are drawing closer to a historic milestone as the Light Up Southeast (LUSE) Project enters its final phase, with electricity expected to begin flowing into the city by late June or early July 2026.
During a recent media tour of the Greenville Injection Substation and the Solar Farm in Murrayville Township, project engineers highlighted the significant progress made on key installations. According to the engineers, major components, including transformers and power distribution systems, are nearing completion, while work at the Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Station has reached between 80 and 95 percent completion.
Once commissioned, the facility will serve as the central hub for distributing electricity to Greenville and surrounding communities, marking a major leap forward in expanding access to reliable energy across southeastern Liberia.
The Light Up Southeast Project is already making an impact beyond infrastructure development. Interns attached to the Greenville Injection Substation and Solar Farm have praised the initiative for providing valuable hands-on training and employment opportunities.
The interns, who hail from Sinoe, Maryland, and Grand Bassa Counties, described the project as a life-changing experience that is equipping them with practical skills and technical expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to Liberia’s growing energy sector.
As the project nears completion, excitement continues to spread throughout Greenville and neighboring communities.
Among those eagerly awaiting the arrival of electricity is Greenville resident T. Kofa Monboe, who described the development as a dream becoming reality.
«”For many years, we have waited for this moment. Seeing the project reach this stage brings joy to my heart. Electricity will improve our daily lives and open opportunities that many of us have only imagined. I am grateful to everyone who has worked tirelessly to make this happen,” Monboe said.»
Local businessman Amos P. Bolo also expressed excitement and appreciation for the progress achieved by the project team.
“I am overwhelmed with happiness seeing how far this project has come. The engineers and workers deserve commendation for their dedication. Reliable electricity will help businesses grow, reduce operating costs, and create opportunities for economic development throughout Greenville and beyond,” Bolo noted.
In Poriver Community, resident Dorcas Sneh reflected on the project’s journey and the determination that has brought it to its current stage.
“When I look at where this project started and where it is today, I feel proud and excited. There were times when people doubted whether we would reach this point, but today we can see real progress. This project will bring positive change to our communities and improve the lives of many families,” Sneh said.
The anticipated impact of electricity on the education sector is also generating optimism. Princess Palay, Business Manager of Mississippi Nursery and Elementary School, believes the project will significantly improve learning conditions for students and teachers.

It will create opportunities to use modern educational tools, improve administrative operations, and provide a better learning environment for our students. Beyond the school, I am equally excited about what this means for my family and home. Access to electricity will improve our quality of life in many ways,” Palay stated.»
