The Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas has expressed deep grief and concern following a tragic road accident involving a vehicle assigned to its Education Office, an incident that reportedly claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured.
According to a statement published on the Diocese of Cape Palmas’ official Facebook page on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the heartbreaking accident occurred in Salala along the Gbarnga Monrovia Highway during the early morning hours.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash. The Diocese said two persons are believed to have died, while several others sustained serious injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially established, except for the driver, who was identified as Mr. Thomas Wesseh.
In its statement, the Diocese disclosed that Mr. Wesseh departed Harper on Monday, June 22, with clear instructions to spend the night at the Catholic Mission in Zwedru and continue his journey to Monrovia the following day.
The Church further revealed that the driver had been specifically instructed not to carry passengers during the trip.
“The Diocese is deeply concerned by reports suggesting that these instructions may not have been followed,” the statement noted.
As grief continues to spread among church members and affected families, Church authorities say they are awaiting official reports from relevant government agencies and are fully cooperating with efforts to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
The Diocese extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the speedy recovery of those battling injuries.
“The Diocese of Cape Palmas prays for the souls of those who lost their lives and extends sincere condolences to their families. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who sustained injuries, as we pray for their healing and recovery,” the statement said.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the crash, including the events leading up to the accident and reports that the vehicle may have been carrying unauthorized passengers.
The Diocese reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with investigators as authorities work to establish the full facts surrounding the tragedy.
