‎ZWEDRU, GRAND GEDEH COUNTY – Political tensions are escalating in Zwedru after a dispute over the use of Tubman Palace Square triggered heated exchanges between supporters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Unity Party (UP), raising concerns about possible unrest ahead of scheduled political activities.

‎The controversy began after the CDC requested permission to use Tubman Palace Square, a venue currently hosting the ongoing Peace and Unity Tournament organized by Grand Gedeh County Youth and Sports Coordinator, George Dogbeh.

‎Speaking in an interview, Dogbeh said the tournament was properly planned and approved through the Office of the City Mayor before it commenced.

‎ He explained that organizers secured official authorization and had already been using the facility for more than four days before the CDC submitted its request to occupy the same venue.

‎According to the Office of the City Mayor, permission had already been granted to the Youth and Sports Coordinator to use Tubman Palace Square for the duration of the tournament based on prior arrangements.

‎Despite that position, a Thursday evening meeting reportedly saw CDC supporters declare that they intended to use the field regardless of the ongoing sporting event.

‎Tournament organizers, however, insist they have lawful authorization from the city authorities and maintain that they will not surrender the venue before the tournament concludes.

‎Meanwhile, the dispute has spilled onto social media, where supporters of the CDC and the Unity Party have exchanged hostile messages and alleged threats on Facebook, fueling fears of political violence and deepening divisions within the county.

‎As tensions continue to mount, residents are calling on political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and resolve the dispute peacefully to prevent violence and preserve public order in Grand Gedeh County.
