CENTAL Boss Warns US$1B Revenue Must Benefit Ordinary Liberians

Monrovia, Liberia — Leading anti-corruption civil society leader Anderson Miamen has cautioned the Liberian government to ensure that the country’s reported US$1 billion domestic revenue achievement translates into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.

Miamen, Executive Director of the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), said the revenue milestone could lose its significance if public resources are instead used to expand government positions and increase compensation for politicians.

“The 1 Billion USD Revenue accomplishment will mean nothing to ordinary Liberians if we create more seats for politicians to get fat salaries and benefits,” Miamen said.

His comments come as the government celebrates surpassing US$1 billion in domestic revenue collection, describing the development as a historic milestone for Liberia.

The CENTAL executive’s statement adds to growing public attention over how the increased revenue will be managed and whether citizens will see measurable improvements in essential services and living conditions.

Miamen’s remarks also underscore concerns about accountability, public spending and the need to ensure that increased government revenue contributes to national development rather than excessive political expenditure.

The government has pledged that the additional revenue will support development priorities, including education, healthcare, public-sector salaries, infrastructure and economic opportunities for Liberians.
