MONROVIA, Liberia — Maryland County District #2 Representative Anthony Williams has accused House Speaker Richard Koon of blocking efforts to investigate Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman over an alleged US$336 million drug scandal.
Williams claimed that lawmakers proposed investigating allegations and counterclaims within the Liberia National Police but were reportedly rejected by the Speaker, who allegedly cited political loyalty.
“We told the Speaker, let’s investigate the drug issue; the Speaker said no; ‘Da our government; da our party,’” Williams said.
The lawmaker also questioned an agreement reportedly signed by President Joseph Boakai and the Minister of Foreign Affairs during a visit to the United States, which he said brought individuals described as “third-party citizens” into Liberia.
Williams said lawmakers wanted the agreement and the individuals’ presence explained, but alleged that their concerns were dismissed.
The allegations against Speaker Koon and the claims surrounding the drug scandal and agreement have not been independently verified. Koon’s response was not included in the information provided.
