MONROVIA, Liberia — Assistant Minister of Labor Emmanuel K. Barnes has called on Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay Sr. to resign or face impeachment, raising concerns about the judiciary’s leadership and accountability.
In a statement, Barnes accused the Chief Justice of undermining public confidence in the judiciary, particularly regarding jury management and allegations of bribery.
He also questioned Gbeisay’s handling of a case involving a citizen whom Barnes alleged was accused publicly before being jailed on the Chief Justice’s instructions.
Additionally, Barnes criticized the Chief Justice’s reported position on the President’s constitutional appointment powers.
“The Chief Justice should by now tender in his resignation,” Barnes wrote, arguing that the office’s reputation was at stake.
Barnes further stated that, if he were a member of the House of Representatives, he would introduce an impeachment bill.
The allegations and interpretations in Barnes’ statement have not been independently verified. A response from the Chief Justice was not included in the statement provided.
