The Bank of Ghana has termed recent news on social media about the movement of uncirculated bank notes as misinformation and disinformation.
The Ghanaian Central Bank said it has a longstanding currency transfer agreement with Liberia since 2004, and per this agreement, it receives imported currency on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia for re-export to Monrovia.
“The said uncirculated bank note mentioned in the social media discussions on August 27 are part of the longstanding agreement. When all logical arrangements, including scheduled flights, are finalized, these would be re-exported to the Central Bank of Liberia,” the Bank said.
The Bank said all relevant stakeholders are officially informed of the entry and exit of consignments related to the arrangement.
The Bank further noted that unless there was mischievous intent, those who made this matter out of an issue for public discussion had no reason to do so.
The Bank described as unfortunate for a lawmaker to circulate such sensitive procedural and administrative clearance letter involving another sovereign nation in a bid to misinform and disinform the public by attaching a narrative that seeks to suggest wrongdoing.
The Bank of Ghana claimed that it has one of the most sophisticated state-of-the-art currency management operations within the subregion and will continue to provide such support to its peer countries as per international best practice.
