The Youth League of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has issued a strong denunciation of what it calls an attempted “coup” aimed at removing House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. The league is demanding the expulsion of CDC-affiliated lawmakers involved in the effort, claiming their actions defy party unity and undermine democratic principles.
In a press conference held Friday, CDC Youth League Acting Chairman Eddie Tarawali condemned the lawmakers’ attempts to unseat Speaker Koffa, a member of the opposition. Tarawali urged the CDC’s Executive Committee to take decisive action, calling for the immediate removal of any CDC lawmakers supporting the move against Koffa. “The CDC must protect its integrity and safeguard Liberia’s democratic processes,” Tarawali asserted.
Reports indicate that at least seven CDC representatives are among those seeking to oust Speaker Koffa. The Youth League expressed concern over this faction’s alleged collusion with external forces, describing their actions as both disloyal and damaging to party discipline.
The Youth League also criticized the increasing presence of police forces around the Capitol, arguing that the authorities are using intimidation tactics to stifle both citizens and dissenting lawmakers. Tarawali called for international intervention, urging civil society and global partners to investigate what he described as a “clear act of bribery” allegedly driven by the Executive branch.
The Youth League accused Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung of orchestrating the movement to depose Speaker Koffa, labeling the attempt a “desperate and politically subversive” maneuver. Tarawali further alleged that over $1.5 million in public funds had been misused to finance this effort, which he claims is a serious threat to Liberia’s governance and democratic integrity.
In a powerful message to party members, Tarawali warned against creating an “imperial presidency” and emphasized the importance of unity within the CDC.
He called for all members to resist divisive strategies that jeopardize the country’s stability.
As the situation intensifies, the Youth League announced plans for a strategic retreat from November 14-17, 2024. This gathering will aim to consolidate support among CDC youth for Speaker Koffa and organize opposition to what they view as corrupt and anti-democratic practices.
“This is a crucial moment for both our party and our nation,” Tarawali said in closing, urging CDC partisans to unite against what he described as the “malicious agenda” driven by opposition leader Boakai and his allies.
