Boakai Challenges Cabinet to Boost Agriculture and Meet MCC Standards

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has called on cabinet ministers and heads of government agencies to play a more active role in supporting agriculture, describing the sector as critical to Liberia’s economic growth, food security, and job creation.

Speaking during the 7th Cabinet Meeting at the Tea House of the Executive Mansion on Thursday, the President said agriculture remains one of the country’s most important sectors and should be given greater attention.

“Agriculture is one of the ways we can create jobs, improve food production, and strengthen our economy,” President Boakai told cabinet members.

He urged government officials to go beyond policy discussions and support efforts aimed at increasing local food production and strengthening the agricultural sector.

According to the President, greater investment in farming can help reduce Liberia’s dependence on imported food while creating opportunities for thousands of Liberians, particularly young people.

Boakai said improving agricultural productivity would not only strengthen food security but also help improve livelihoods in rural communities where farming remains a major source of income.

He stressed that government officials should lead efforts to encourage agricultural development and support local producers across the country.

The President’s remarks come as his administration continues to promote agriculture as a key part of its development agenda.

Boakai also used the meeting to address Liberia’s progress toward qualifying for a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.

He reminded ministers and agency heads that meeting the MCC scorecard requirements will require commitment and accountability across government institutions.

“We all have a responsibility to ensure that Liberia meets the standards required under the MCC program,” he said.

The President noted that the country’s performance in governance, transparency, and public service delivery will play a major role in determining its eligibility for future international support.

He said Liberia’s ability to attract investment and development assistance depends largely on how well government institutions perform and maintain public trust.

Boakai called for stronger coordination among ministries and agencies, emphasizing that progress in agriculture and governance will be essential to achieving the country’s development goals.
