MONROVIA, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has indicated that he may seek a second term in office in the 2029 presidential election.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with Liberians in the United States, President Boakai responded to a question about whether he would seek another term by saying, “Should I run again? I am still entitled to one term.”
The remark marks one of the clearest indications from the President regarding his possible political plans beyond his current tenure.
Boakai was elected President in 2023 and assumed office in January 2024. Liberia’s Constitution provides for a six-year presidential term and permits a president to serve no more than two terms.
However, the President has not, in the statement provided, formally announced his candidacy for the 2029 election.
His comments are likely to add to discussions among political parties and potential presidential contenders ahead of the next electoral cycle.
