Buchanan, Grand Bassa County—The Youth League of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) is convening a significant retreat this week in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. This marks a pivotal moment in the party’s efforts to reflect, rebrand, and reorganize in preparation for the future.
The retreat, which brought together key youth leaders, activists, and members from across the country, is held under the theme: “Turning Setback into a Great Comeback.”
According to the organizing committee, the gathering is part of a larger strategy to rejuvenate the party’s base, especially among the youth demographic, as it seeks to regain momentum after losing state power to the ruling Unity Party in the 2023 general presidential and legislative elections.
The CDC ran in the runoff with the UP, thereby losing to the party that ruled the country for 12 years by a slight margin of over 20,000 votes.
With the political landscape shifting ahead of the 2029 elections, the CDC Youth League is focusing on strengthening its internal structures and outreach strategies. During the retreat, the Youth League is expected to engage in workshops and discussions centered on political engagement, youth empowerment, and party unity.
According to the organizers, the gathering in the Port City of Buchanan is about reflecting on the past and finding ways to move forward with greater determination. The theme of the CDC retreat speaks to their resilience and commitment to turning setbacks into a strong resurgence.
The youth wing is focused on rebranding amid criticism from opposition factions and civil society groups, which have pointed to cracks within the party’s youth structure. According to attendees, this retreat attempts to close those gaps, realign with their core values, and present a fresh image to voters.
The Youth League has emphasized that throughout the event, they will address the real issues facing Liberia’s youth today, such as unemployment, education, and access to healthcare. The workshop sessions will feature guest speakers from various sectors, including civic leaders, economists, and youth advocates, who will share their ideas on fostering sustainable development and meaningful political participation for young Liberians.
Many participants hope the retreat will reinvigorate the party and create lasting partnerships with grassroots organizations nationwide. As Liberia gears up for the 2029 elections, the CDC Youth League seeks to solidify its position as a leading force within the opposition community, positioning itself as an advocate for the country’s younger generation.
