The Liberia National Police (LNP) has concluded a consultative meeting with citizens and transport stakeholders in Margibi County aimed at addressing the growing number of road traffic accidents across the country.
The engagement, held under the Public Safety Division of the LNP, brought together community leaders, commercial drivers, motorcyclists, youth representatives, and local authorities. The discussions focused on identifying practical steps to reduce road crashes and improve discipline on public roads.
Police officials said the initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen collaboration between law enforcement and the public, especially in communities where road accidents have become increasingly common.
Speaking at the meeting, Chief of Traffic Alphanso Binda expressed concern over the rising number of road traffic accidents recorded in Montserrado, Nimba, Bong, and Margibi counties. He said many of the crashes were avoidable and linked them to reckless driving, over-speeding, and disregard for basic traffic rules.
Binda stressed that road safety cannot be achieved by the police alone, noting that drivers, motorcyclists, and pedestrians all have a role to play in preventing avoidable deaths and injuries on the roads.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. We must all play our part by respecting traffic laws and exercising caution on our roads to save lives,” he said.
He further urged drivers to avoid overloading, speeding, and unsafe overtaking, while calling on motorcyclists to wear protective gear and observe traffic signals at all times.
Participants at the consultation welcomed the engagement, describing it as timely given the increasing number of road crashes affecting families and communities across the county.
Several speakers at the forum called for stronger public awareness campaigns, particularly in rural and urban communities where road safety education remains limited.
Others recommended stricter enforcement of traffic laws, regular inspection of vehicles, and improved monitoring of commercial transport operators to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The Liberia National Police reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with citizens and relevant stakeholders to reduce road accidents and promote safer road use nationwide.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the LNP urged all road users to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations at all times, warning that negligence on the roads continues to claim lives unnecessarily.
The consultation is part of ongoing efforts by the police to address road safety challenges, which authorities say remain a major concern across Liberia.
