Former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has accused the Liberia National Police (LNP) of orchestrating a politically motivated campaign to tarnish his reputation in connection with the Capitol Building arson investigation.
Koffa made the statement after his release from the Monrovia Central Prison, where he spent a night in police custody and two nights at the Monrovia Central Prison in jail.
Rep. Koffa claimed that the LNP’s actions are driven by politics, stating, “The Police IG statement was politically motivated.”
He vowed to have his legal team “deconstruct the basket of lies, innuendos, and misstatements” in the coming weeks.
The Grand Kru District #2 lawmaker Koffa and three other lawmakers were released on a $440,000 property surety bond after being charged with multiple crimes, including arson, criminal mischief, and attempted murder.
The surety bond was secured by real property offered by sureties Jonda Janet Koffa and Marjan Mona Koffa.
Upcoming Preliminary Hearing
The Monrovia City Court has scheduled a preliminary hearing for June 10, 2025.
The outcome of the hearing could determine whether the bond stands or is revoked ahead of trial.
The former speaker rejected the police IG’s description of the incident as a “treasonous act” aimed at destabilizing democratic governance, stating that the case is not about justice but politics.
