FLY Raises Concern Over Arrest of Former Speaker Fonati Koffa and Lawmakers

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), the national umbrella organization representing young people across the country, has expressed deep concern over the recent arrests of former Speaker of the House, Hon. Fonati Kofa, and three sitting members of the House of Representatives Hon. Abu Kamara, Hon. Prescilla Cooper, and Hon. Jacob Debee.

The lawmakers were recently detained and charged with serious criminal offenses including arson, criminal mischief, endangering lives, and attempted murder. These charges stem from their alleged involvement in a fire incident that occurred on December 18, 2024. All four individuals are currently being held at the Monrovia Central Prison.

In a statement issued on Saturday, June 8, FLY emphasized the seriousness of arresting elected officials and urged for the judicial process to be carried out with integrity, impartiality, and full respect for human rights.

“We acknowledge the independence of our justice system and the important role of law enforcement in upholding national laws. However, this moment calls for restraint, transparency, and adherence to the rule of law,” the statement read.

The youth organization also expressed alarm over the reported arbitrary arrest and maltreatment of Atty. Janga A. Kwo, Chairman of a leading opposition political party. FLY noted that such incidents risk escalating political tensions and undermining national unity.

Calling for calm and constructive engagement, the organization urged the Liberia National Police to uphold democratic principles and human rights. It further appealed to both the government and opposition parties to refrain from inflammatory actions and instead seek dialogue as a means of resolving current tensions.

“Young people across Liberia look to national leaders for guidance, inspiration, and stability,” the statement continued. “We call on the government to keep the public informed, ensure that the rights of the accused are protected, and avoid any actions that may incite unrest.”

FLY also appealed to youth groups and civil society organizations to remain active in promoting justice, transparency, and good governance, while encouraging young Liberians to remain peaceful and law-abiding.

The Federation concluded by calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the treatment of Chairman Kwo and all others in custody, reaffirming its opposition to any actions that threaten Liberia’s peace and security.
