FDA Destroys Over LD$140,000 Worth of Illegal Bush Meat in Zwedru

Grand Gedeh — The Forestry Development Authority (FDA) Region 4 has destroyed more than LD$140,000 worth of bush meat, including protected wildlife species, following a major crackdown at the Kanneh Road Check Point in Zwedru.

The operation, carried out on Monday, May 25, 2026, led to the confiscation of several quantities of illegally transported bush meat during what authorities described as a routine inspection aimed at combating the illegal hunting and trafficking of endangered animals.

According to the FDA, the suspected owner of the bush meat was arrested by officers of the Liberia National Police and later fined US$100 for violating wildlife protection regulations.

Authorities said the action forms part of ongoing efforts to enforce Liberia’s wildlife protection laws, which prohibit the killing, transportation, sale, or possession of protected animal species without authorization from the FDA.

The agency has meanwhile warned residents of Grand Gedeh and surrounding counties to desist from hunting, transporting, and selling protected wildlife species or risk prosecution.

Under Liberia’s Wildlife and National Parks Act, the FDA is empowered to confiscate illegal bush meat, arrest offenders, and impose fines or pursue prosecution against individuals involved in wildlife-related crimes.

FDA officials emphasized that protected wildlife species are safeguarded under national law and called on citizens to support conservation efforts aimed at preserving Liberia’s biodiversity.
