The House of Representatives has elected Moima Briggs-Mensah, Augustine B. Chiewolo, and Samson Q. Wiah as Liberia’s new representatives to the ECOWAS Parliament.
Representative Briggs-Mensah represents Independent Candidates, Chiewolo represents the ruling Unity Party, and Wiah represents the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).
The elections took place during the 11th Day Sitting of the 1st Quarter of the 2nd Session on Tuesday, with each candidate running unopposed and being elected on a white ballot, demonstrating their colleagues’ confidence in their leadership.
According to the House Press Bureau, the election followed the recall of Liberia’s previous representatives due to concerns over the selection process and compliance with ECOWAS protocols.
The issue was brought to the House’s attention by Hon. James Kolleh of Bong County, District 2, and Hon. Johnson Williams of River Gee County, District 3, on February 13, prompting the immediate withdrawal of Liberia’s former representatives. The election was conducted in accordance with Article 18 of the ECOWAS Protocol, which mandates political balance and female representation within delegations.
As a result, the newly elected members replaced Representative Samuel Enders of Montserrado County, District 6, and Taa Wongbe of Nimba County, District 9. However, Representative Briggs-Mensah retained her position. Following their election, the lawmakers were officially sworn into office. Majority Bloc Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, speaking on behalf of the Plenary, congratulated them and expressed his best wishes as they represent Liberia at the regional legislative body.
