Illegal Mining in Jackson Village Sparks Legislative Concern

Monrovia, Liberia- Bong County Electrical District #3 Representative J. Marvin Cole has raised alarm over what he described as illegal mining operations taking place in the Jackson Village area of the Gbarmue community, Electoral District #3 in Bong County.

In a formal complaint addressed to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Hon. Cole is calling on the Ministry to intervene swiftly.

Rep. Cole alleged that a group of unauthorized miners are actively extracting minerals in the Gbarnga Mining District without proper licenses or oversight, depriving both the local community and the government of much-needed revenue.

“These revenues could have been serious contributing factors to our already broken economy,” he wrote in a letter dated March 28, 2025, to Mines and Energy Minister Wilmot Paye.

The Bong District #3 Lawmaker emphasized the need for immediate enforcement action to halt these illicit activities and safeguard the country’s natural resources.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency and governance, urging the Ministry to act in the interest of the Liberian people.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy has yet to respond publicly to the complaint.

Illegal mining has been a recurring issue across Liberia, often linked to environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and social conflicts in affected communities.
