The leadership of Liberia’s House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Justice and the Inspector General of Police to respond to serious security concerns raised by River Gee County District #3 Representative, Johnson S. N. Williams.
The action follows a formal complaint by Representative Williams, who reported repeated threats against his life and that of his family. He also expressed frustration over what he described as the Liberia National Police’s lack of response to his concerns.
According to Williams, this marks the fifth time he has reported such threats since his election, with earlier complaints dating back to 2024. He said multiple requests, including appeals for armed police protection, have gone unanswered.
Detailing recent incidents, the lawmaker alleged that a suspicious vehicle has been trailing both him and his wife. He said his wife was followed while driving and later discovered damage to her vehicle’s windshield wipers. Williams also reported being followed from 9th Street in Sinkor to the University of Liberia, and later to the compound of Holy Innocents Catholic Church.
On the same day, he said two unidentified individuals dressed in black followed him to his residence before departing in a Toyota Corolla bearing license plate PC 546.
The lawmaker further referenced a February 15, 2024 request for the assignment of an armed officer from the Police Support Unit—specifically CPL Roland M. Taylay II-to provide VIP protection, which he says remains unaddressed.
Williams also cited a December 4, 2022 incident in which he sustained injuries during an attack on his property linked to a dispute over an electrical pole. Although suspects were reportedly arrested and taken to the Zone 8 Police Depot, he said the case remains unresolved.
He noted that the ongoing threats, coupled with heightened tensions stemming from the leadership crisis within the 55th Legislature since October 2024, have intensified his security concerns.
“I am seriously concerned about the safety of my family and myself, as I could be attacked at any time,” he said, calling for immediate state protection.
House leadership said the summons is intended to provide clarity on the matter and ensure appropriate measures are taken to protect the lawmaker while strengthening public confidence in the country’s security institutions. The House also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of all members and called for swift action from the relevant authorities
