Konobo Tensions Rise as FDA Officers Allegedly Detained During Illegal Mining Crackdown

Tensions are running high in Konobo Administrative District following allegations that traditional leaders and community members detained officials of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) during an enforcement operation targeting illegal mining activities along the Cavalla River and within the Krahn-Grebo National Park.

According to an investigation by Verity News, FDA officers, including a regional forester, were allegedly held after carrying out an operation against foreign nationals reportedly involved in illegal mining in the area.

Sources say the FDA team was detained from around 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, until the early hours of the following day. The confrontation is said to have followed claims that FDA personnel destroyed makeshift structures and arrested individuals suspected of illegal mining along the Cavalla River.

About three weeks earlier, an FDA patrol reportedly discovered Malian nationals mining inside the Krahn-Grebo National Park. Authorities attempted to arrest them, but they allegedly fled across the border into Côte d’Ivoire. One Liberian national was arrested and reportedly told investigators he had been collecting fees on behalf of individuals from Druwoh Town.

Following the incident, FDA officers visited Druwoh Town to seek clarification from local authorities. The team met the town chief, who requested time to consult elders. However, tensions escalated when, according to sources, community members mobilized and summoned cultural groups against the officers.

Fearing for their safety, the FDA team reportedly tried to leave for Barwu Town but were allegedly blocked and followed by residents throughout the day.

Efforts to resolve the standoff were led by Paramount Chief James Saylee and Electoral Committee Chairman Ashai Gaye, who intervened to negotiate the release of the officers. Sources claim livestock and cash were offered as part of the mediation process.

The situation reportedly worsened when cultural and tourism figure Youdy Beldy arrived and allegedly accused local officials of supporting the FDA operation, further inflaming tensions.

The FDA team was eventually released between midnight and 1:00 a.m. the following day.

An investigative team later arrived from Monrovia to probe the incident. During the inquiry, community members accused the FDA of destroying cocoa trees and burning structures used by foreign miners. FDA officials denied the allegations, insisting their actions were limited to enforcing forestry and environmental laws.

The FDA also clarified that it did not notify the Community Forest Management Body (CFMB) or the Electoral Committee, as the operation focused on activities within the national park rather than community forest land.

New allegations have since emerged that traditional groups, acting on instructions from local cultural leaders, detained Electoral Committee Chairman Ashai Gaye and CFMB Secretary Bedell Krayou. They are said to have been taken to Druwoh Town, where they were allegedly humiliated, tied up, and accused of supporting FDA operations.

Paramount Chief James Saylee was also reportedly affected by the dispute.

Residents speaking anonymously describe an atmosphere of fear, saying many people are reluctant to speak openly due to possible reprisals.

The dispute comes amid growing tensions over foreign nationals, particularly Burkinabé miners and farmers, in the district. Disagreements over land use, illegal mining, and forest management have deepened divisions among community leaders, forest authorities, and government agencies.

There are also concerns that the unrest could undermine development efforts and discourage investment in the area. Reports say a company scheduled to carry out a forest inspection in Konobo has already faced delays due to the situation.

Local authorities are expected to visit the district in the coming days to engage stakeholders and assess the crisis.
