Liberia Police Charge Woman Over False Kidnapping Claim

The Liberia National Police (LNP) has arrested and charged a 26-year-old woman, identified as Amie T. Dean, for allegedly fabricating a kidnapping report, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

According to police, Dean, a resident of Paynesville City, faces charges of making false statements and filing a false report to law enforcement, in violation of Liberia’s Revised Penal Code. She is currently awaiting trial.

Dean was initially reported missing on April 2, 2026, sparking concern among family members and the public. She later reappeared on April 4, claiming she had been abducted by unidentified individuals traveling in an unknown vehicle.

However, during subsequent questioning by investigators, police say she admitted that the kidnapping claim was untrue.

In an official statement, the LNP said:

“During police interrogation, Miss Dean admitted that the kidnapping claim was fabricated and misleading. She pleaded for mercy, acknowledging that the report was false.”

Authorities emphasized that false reports pose serious challenges to law enforcement operations, particularly in a country where security resources are limited.

“The Liberia National Police urges the public to refrain from making false reports, as such actions divert critical resources and undermine public safety efforts,” the statement added.

The case has drawn public attention, highlighting concerns about the misuse of emergency response systems and the legal consequences of providing false information to authorities.

The LNP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring accountability, warning that individuals found making false claims will be prosecuted in accordance with Liberian law.
