MONROVIA, Liberia — In a move aimed at improving healthcare delivery and emergency medical services, the Ministry of Health has officially commissioned 25 ambulances for deployment across Liberia.
The commissioning ceremony brought together senior government officials, lawmakers, health sector stakeholders, development partners, and members of county health teams.
Addressing attendees, Deputy Health Minister for Administration Martha C. Morris said the new ambulances demonstrate the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare services, particularly for residents of rural and underserved communities.
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Teyah Sackie Moore highlighted the vital role ambulance services play in strengthening healthcare systems. According to her, timely transportation of patients is essential to reducing preventable deaths and ensuring effective referrals between healthcare facilities.
Speaking on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Governance Program Analyst Boye Johnson reiterated the organization’s support for Liberia’s health sector reforms and efforts to build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system.
The vehicles were formally dedicated by Representative Julie Fatorma Wiah, Chair of the House Committee on Health, and Grand Gedeh County Senator Thomas Yaya Nimley, who serves as Co-Chair of the Senate Committee on Health.
Representative Wiah described the ambulances as a source of hope for communities that often struggle to access emergency medical services, while Senator Nimley emphasized the need for responsible management and long-term sustainability.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Annette B. Davis of Bomi County, representing County Health Officers, said the ambulances will help reduce delays in patient transfers and improve emergency response capabilities throughout the country.
The Ministry of Health noted that the vehicles were acquired through the Government of Liberia’s continued investment in strengthening the health sector. The Ministry further expressed optimism that the ambulances will improve referral systems, enhance emergency preparedness, and ultimately save lives across Liberia.
Health authorities reaffirmed their commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare and strengthening emergency response services for citizens nationwide.
