A protest in demand for jobs and justice, organized by the Student Unification Party, is gaining momentum as hundreds of aggrieved protesters have begun gathering on the main campus of the University of LIberia.
SUP, in an official statement consisting of 75 counts against the government, alleged that the Boakai-Koung administration has miserably failed to address the country’s growing social and economic challenges, particularly those affecting young people. The group claimed that high youth unemployment, mass poverty, corruption, and injustices remain prevalent under Pres. Boakai.
“Thousands of Liberian youths wake up every day without jobs, skills opportunities, or hope,” the statement said, adding that many young people have been forced into street trading or other informal activities to survive.
SUP also accused the government of wasteful spending on a few political elites including lavish foreign travels, exorbitant salaries and benefits, luxurious vehicles, among others. “While the vast majority of the people across Liberia suffer including thousands of civil servants, a handful of public officials are enjoying themselves by milking State resources,” SUP chairman Odecious Mulbah said.
