Monrovia, Liberia –The National Port Authority (NPA) has issued a directive waiving all storage charges for containers and vehicles held at the Freeport of Monrovia overnight on April 30, following a significant operational disruption that affected port activities.
In a public notice released on May 1, the NPA acknowledged that truckers experienced substantial challenges on the night of April 30, which hindered the timely loading and exit of containers from the Freeport.
As a result, APM Terminals Liberia, the private operator responsible for container handling, and the Freeport of Monrovia itself have been ordered to waive any related storage charges.
“The Management of APM Terminals Liberia is hereby instructed to waive all storage charges for containers affected during the period of this disruption,” the NPA directive stated.
The statement further noted: “The Freeport of Monrovia is likewise directed to waive any storage fees for containers and vehicles that remained overnight within the Port facility as a result of this impasse.”
While the nature of the disruption was not detailed, stakeholders have welcomed the NPA’s swift response and temporary relief measure, which comes amid growing concerns over port congestion and rising costs for shippers and logistics firms.
The NPA thanked all port users and stakeholders for their cooperation and expressed its commitment to resolving the situation and ensuring the smooth operation of Liberia’s busiest seaport.
Further updates are expected as the NPA and APM Terminals work together to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
