President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has welcomed the full restoration of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant following the successful repair of a turbine that had been out of service since 2021.
The damaged turbine had reduced the plant’s output by about 22 megawatts. With the repair now completed, the facility has returned to its full generating capacity of 88 megawatts.
Speaking at the commissioning of the 20-megawatt Solar Photovoltaic Plant at the Mount Coffee Hydropower Complex on Friday, June 5, 2026, President Boakai described the development as a major boost to efforts aimed at improving electricity supply across the country.
He said the restored capacity will help improve the availability and reliability of power for households, businesses, and public institutions.
According to the Executive Mansion, the rehabilitation reflects government’s ongoing commitment to rebuilding and maintaining key national infrastructure in order to better serve the population.
With the hydropower plant now fully restored and the new solar facility in operation, government says the development marks steady progress toward expanding electricity access and strengthening stability in the national grid.
The turbine was repaired after extensive technical work by engineers and specialists, allowing the plant to return to full operation after several years of reduced output.
President Boakai also expressed appreciation to the Liberia Electricity Corporation, development partners, engineers, and technicians for their role in restoring the plant and supporting improvements in the energy sector.
