Public Works Launches Gravel Roads Rehabilitation

The Ministry of Public Works officially launched the decentralization of the Community Gravel Roads Rehabilitation Project in Maryland County on Monday, April 7, 2025, marking a significant step in the Government of Liberia’s efforts to improve infrastructure and accessibility across the country. The expansion of the project, which originally started in Montserrado, Margibi, and Bomi Counties, now focuses on underserved areas in Maryland, particularly around Harper City and Tubman University.

This expansion comes as a direct response to longstanding concerns from Maryland County’s lawmakers about the deteriorating state of roads, especially during the rainy season when many routes become impassable. In a show of commitment, the County’s lawmakers have pledged to provide fuel oil for the running of equipment used in the rehabilitation process. The project is expected to promote economic activities, enhance road safety, and improve the overall quality of life for residents in these rural communities.

At the launch event held at Tubman University, Minister of Public Works Roland Layfette Giddings stressed the importance of equitable infrastructure development across all regions of Liberia. “Decentralization is not just a policy; it is a necessity. Our people in Maryland deserve the same road quality and access as those in urban hubs. Today marks a new dawn for Tubman University students, faculty, and surrounding residents,” Giddings said.

The Minister also highlighted the government’s vision to ensure that Maryland County will be connected by paved roads by 2029. He called on local residents to take ownership of the project, emphasizing that community involvement would be crucial to its success.

Rev. Dr. Olu Menje, President of Tubman University, also lauded the initiative, noting that improved road access would greatly benefit students, staff, and visiting faculty. The enhanced roads are expected to ease mobility, boost local commerce, and improve emergency response capabilities, further contributing to the growth and development of the region.
