Residents of Old Kru Town Bassa Community and Huffman Station in Harper District have welcomed the start of a new bridge project aimed at improving movement between the two communities.
District #1 Representative P. Mark Jury officially broke ground for the project shortly after arriving in Maryland County on Monday.
The ceremony brought together local officials, community leaders, and residents who turned out to witness the launch of the long-awaited project.
The bridge, valued at more than US$10,000, will link Old Kru Town Bassa Community and Huffman Station, where residents have faced transportation difficulties for years, especially during the rainy season.
According to project officials, construction is expected to be completed within one month. Once finished, the bridge will provide safer and easier access for hundreds of residents.
Speaking at the ceremony, Representative Jury said the project reflects his commitment to addressing community needs through practical development initiatives. He noted that improving infrastructure remains one of his priorities and called on residents to help protect and maintain the bridge after its completion.
“This project is intended to address a longstanding challenge faced by our people. Development must reach every community, and improving access is essential to improving livelihoods,” Jury said.
Residents described the project as a major relief, noting that schoolchildren, farmers, market women, healthcare workers, and elderly citizens have long struggled to travel between the two communities, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Community members said the bridge will reduce travel time, improve access to schools and health facilities, boost local trade, and strengthen ties between neighboring communities.
Local leaders also praised the initiative, saying improved infrastructure is important for economic growth and community development.
Upon completion, the bridge is expected to become a vital transportation link and support ongoing development efforts across Harper District and Maryland County.
