Liberia has welcomed with pride and gratitude the re-election of Dr. Harry T. Conway as Chair of the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), a move described as a reaffirmation of Liberia’s growing influence in the global maritime space.
Speaking at the close of the MEPC session in London, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the IMO, Ambassador Robert Wilmot Kpadeh, extended heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Conway, applauding his exceptional leadership and the confidence reposed in him by member states across the globe. Conway’s nomination was made by Indonesia, seconded by Finland, and supported by Brazil, reflecting the broad consensus around his performance and vision.
Ambassador Kpadeh praised Dr. Conway’s stewardship of the committee, highlighting his deep understanding of international shipping, his ability to foster consensus, and his steady guidance through complex environmental and regulatory challenges facing the maritime sector. He emphasized that Conway’s reelection was not only a personal milestone, but also a proud achievement for Liberia and a strong endorsement of the nation’s capacity to lead on the global maritime stage.
Under Conway’s leadership, the MEPC has advanced critical discussions and decisions related to the environmental sustainability of shipping, particularly in areas of decarbonization, marine pollution, and maritime regulation. Ambassador Kpadeh credited these achievements to Conway’s tireless commitment and to the collaborative spirit among the committee’s members and staff.
The Liberian envoy also recognized Dr. Conway’s academic contributions, noting his efforts to mentor and lecture at institutions across the world, further amplifying his impact beyond the committee room.
“This incredible milestone is a testament to Harry’s untiring dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment,” said Ambassador Kpadeh. “His reelection is an honor Liberia does not take lightly. It demonstrates the confidence of the maritime world in our ability to contribute meaningfully to the progress of international shipping.”
Representing Liberia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands, Kpadeh reaffirmed Liberia’s pledge to uphold the trust placed in the country’s leadership and called on the MEPC to continue its important work under Conway’s guidance.
