US$1.5M Set for Flood Victims, Targeting 5,200 Households in Liberia

The World Food Program (WFP), through the United Nations, has allocated US$1.5 million to support flood victims in Liberia.

This financial assistance comes in response to the devastating floods that occurred in late June, which left thousands of people homeless and in dire need of aid.

Making the disclosure on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, the Executive Director of the Liberia National Disaster Management Agency (LNDMA), Ansu Dolley, stated that the funds are intended for flood victims across Liberia.

Dolley said that 5,200 households, representing approximately 28,000 individuals, will benefit from the aid. He highlighted that each household will receive US$45 per month over the period of four months to help them meet basic needs such as food, shelter, and medical care.

The LNDMA boss further disclosed that the Government of Liberia has allocated US$500,000 to further assist flood victims.

Dolley emphasized that the Liberian government’s contribution will help to supplement international efforts to provide immediate relief and ensure that the affected communities receive the necessary support to recover.

“I know some of you might think that this money is going in my pocket, but that’s not the case. There are people who are in dire need.

UNICEF has been going around various communities that were affected and distributing not only money but water guides as well because wells and pumps got contaminated during the flood,” Dolley highlighted.

The flood, which was among the worst seen in the country in recent years, ravaged homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

Communities across Liberia have been struggling to cope with the aftermath, particularly in rural areas where resources are already scarce.

The combined efforts of the WFP, the United Nations, and the Liberian government demonstrate a coordinated response to addressing the humanitarian crisis.

The allocated funds will ensure that the immediate needs of flood victims are met while longer-term recovery strategies are being developed.

This collaborative effort underscores the ongoing challenges Liberia faces with climate-related disasters, as well as the international community’s continued commitment to supporting vulnerable populations during times of crisis.
