Nimba County — Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has declared that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai will be a candidate in the 2029 presidential election, pledging to lead the campaign to secure a second term for the Liberian leader.
Speaking during an honoring and appreciation program organized by citizens of Yarwin Mehnsonoh in Nimba County, Vice President Koung said President Boakai deserves another term to complete major national development projects currently underway.
“I can say to you that the President will be on the ballot in 2029, and I will be leading the campaign so that the President can finish some of the big work he has started, including the hydro project, connecting the southeast, and connecting Lofa to the rest of the country,” Koung told the gathering.
The Vice President emphasized that continuity in leadership would be necessary to ensure the completion of key infrastructure and development initiatives being pursued by the Boakai administration.
Koung also used the occasion to caution appointed government officials against neglecting the needs of citizens, particularly those in their home communities.
Addressing public officials, he said President Boakai expects appointees to make meaningful contributions to the development of their hometowns and maintain strong relationships with local residents.
“To those appointed government officials, do not be mean to citizens,” Koung said. “The President is always saying that if you can’t make an impact anywhere, make an impact in your hometown.”
He further suggested that the administration would evaluate the political performance of government officials based on electoral support from their home areas during the 2029 elections.
“If you are mean to your hometown, after the 2029 elections, we will check where the votes came from. If you are a government official and receive zero votes from your hometown, the President will not retain you,” the Vice President warned.
The remarks drew attention from attendees as the administration continues to encourage public officials to remain connected to the communities they represent and serve.
President Boakai, who assumed office in January 2024, has repeatedly highlighted infrastructure development, national connectivity, and improved public service delivery as key priorities of his administration.
