MONROVIA — Former President George Weah has reacted publicly after a jury acquitted his former Finance Minister, Samuel D. Tweah, of all charges in the high-profile US$6.2 million corruption case.
In a brief message shared on WhatsApp following the verdict, Weah expressed gratitude to God after jurors cleared Tweah of allegations including criminal conspiracy, economic sabotage, theft of public funds, criminal facilitation, and money laundering.
“The God of wisdom, joy, greatness, strength, courage, guidance, protection, favor, breakthrough, blessings and grace, I give you praise, and to you be all the glory,” the former president wrote.
The verdict, delivered by a 15-member jury on Friday, brought an end to one of Liberia’s most closely watched corruption trials involving five former public officials. While Tweah and former FIA Comptroller General D. Moses P. Cooper were acquitted on all counts, three other defendants were found guilty on some charges, while several counts resulted in hung verdicts.
The case attracted significant national attention because of the senior government officials involved and the allegations surrounding the handling of US$6.2 million in public funds.
