Monrovia — Liberian-American activist Norris Johnson has entered the national debate surrounding Montserrado County District 10 Representative Yekeh Y. Kolubah, describing the ongoing controversy as an issue of patriotism and national responsibility rather than political personality.
In a public statement posted on Thursday, April 16, Johnson argued that criticism of Representative Kolubah should not focus on his tone or confrontational style, but instead on what he characterized as a deeper question of loyalty to the state.
“Let us be clear and honest with ourselves—this is not about his tone or choice of words,” Johnson wrote. “This matter cuts far deeper. It is about nationalism, loyalty, and the sacred duty every public servant owes to Liberia.”
Johnson’s comments come amid heightened scrutiny of Kolubah over remarks allegedly made in relation to neighboring Guinea, in the context of concerns about Liberia’s territorial integrity.
According to Johnson, the lawmaker’s statements signaled alignment with a foreign nation at a time when national unity is critical.
“At the core of this issue is a fundamental principle: where do you stand when your country is under pressure?” he wrote, adding that moments of tension—such as border disputes or sovereignty concerns—serve as a true test of allegiance.
The activist emphasized that while freedom of speech remains a constitutional right for all citizens, elected officials carry heightened obligations due to their public roles.
“When you hold public office, you are not just an individual; you are a symbol of the people and a guardian of national interest,” Johnson stated.
He further warned that any perception of a lawmaker placing personal relationships, including those with foreign leaders, above Liberia’s sovereignty raises serious concerns about accountability and leadership.
“Patriotism is not negotiable. It is not situational,” Johnson wrote. “It is a constant obligation.”
Johnson concluded by urging Liberians to view the ongoing proceedings involving Representative Kolubah as a matter of national accountability rather than political targeting, stressing that leaders must demonstrate unwavering commitment to the country at all times.
The statement adds to growing public discourse over the issue, which continues to generate legal, political, and constitutional debate across Liberia.
