A Liberian entrepreneur has raised concerns about confidentiality and public conduct surrounding the ongoing recruitment process of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), urging citizens to exercise sensitivity and restraint.
In a statement, the entrepreneur criticized the widespread sharing of videos and commentary highlighting the literacy levels of some recruits. While acknowledging the importance of education, she questioned whether reading and writing proficiency was explicitly stated as a requirement in the recruitment criteria.
She described the recording and circulation of such footage as a breach of confidentiality, warning that it not only embarrasses individuals but also negatively impacts Liberia’s image internationally.
The entrepreneur further emphasized that not all applicants had equal access to education, noting that socioeconomic barriers have prevented many from completing formal schooling. She called out what she described as “mockery” by more privileged individuals, urging empathy and national unity.
Highlighting the role of government, she suggested that authorities could invest in adult literacy programs to support recruits lacking formal education, rather than exposing them to public ridicule.
She concluded by stressing that patriotism and service should not be judged solely on academic attainment, but on values such as honesty, accountability, and commitment to national development.
