The Ministry of Commerce has destroyed expired goods worth more than US$4,000 following a series of market inspections across River Gee County.
The products were confiscated from several businesses after Commerce inspectors found them still being offered for sale despite having passed their expiration dates.
Officials said the inspections were carried out as part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure that traders comply with Liberia’s commercial regulations.
After being seized, the expired goods were taken to the Ministry of Commerce office in Fish Town, where they were kept until authorities authorized their destruction.
The products were publicly destroyed on Friday, August 28, preventing them from being returned to shops or placed back on the market.
River Gee County Commerce Inspector Richard Bestman said the Ministry intends to strengthen its monitoring activities throughout the county.
Bestman said inspectors will continue visiting markets and business establishments to identify expired products and remove them from circulation.
He also warned business owners against selling outdated goods, saying violators could face fines and other sanctions under Commerce Ministry regulations.
The Ministry is calling on traders to regularly inspect their inventories, pay close attention to expiration dates and remove expired products immediately.
Consumers are also being encouraged to check product labels and expiration dates before purchasing food, beverages and other goods, and to report businesses suspected of selling expired products.
The latest destruction forms part of the Ministry’s broader effort to improve market regulation and protect consumers in River Gee County.
Officials say cooperation between traders, consumers and regulators will be necessary to keep expired and potentially unsafe products off the market.
