Questions are being raised over the reported involvement of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) in a road project in Nimba County after the Acting City Mayor of Saclepea said the political party won a government bid for the work.
Acting Saclepea City Mayor Wallace Zigbuo made the disclosure during a radio interview with journalist Robert Matally on Radio Saclepea, according to an audio recording obtained by Verity News.
Mayor Zigbuo said the project was awarded through a bidding process and that MDR had provided engineers to carry out the work.
“It was a bid that was put out, and it was won by the MDR party,” Zigbuo said during the interview.
He added that the party had brought in its own engineers to handle the road work and said the team had traveled to Bahn and was expected to return later.
The disclosure has raised questions about whether a registered political party can directly receive and implement government-funded road construction projects.
Road construction is generally carried out by companies and contractors with the required technical capacity and legal authorization, making the reported involvement of a political party a matter that warrants clarification from the relevant authorities.
Verity News has contacted the Ministry of Public Works for its position on the reported project and the process through which the contract was awarded. The ministry had not issued a public response at the time of publication.
The report also raises broader concerns about transparency in the awarding of public projects, particularly where political organizations may be involved in work normally performed by private engineering and construction firms.
