“2029, I Will Be on the Ballot” — EFFL Leader Emmanuel Gonquoi Signals Political Ambition

Emmanuel D. Gonquoi, President of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), has declared that he will contest in the 2029 elections, signaling his return to the political arena without specifying the position he intends to seek.

“2029 I will be on the ballot,” Gonquoi declared over the weekend in Kakata City, Margibi County, while addressing supporters who backed his senatorial bid during the 2023 general and presidential elections.

Gonquoi used the occasion to thank his supporters and project what he described as his political growth, insisting that his current standing is different from what it was two years ago.

“The Emmanuel D. Gonquoi you knew two years ago is not the Emmanuel Gonquoi before you here today,” he said.

He also challenged the notion that Margibi County cannot produce a presidential or vice-presidential candidate, declaring that the county should not be sidelined in Liberia’s national leadership.

“Margibi County will not be used as a scapegoat,” Gonquoi stated. “There is no curse on Margibi that we can’t produce a presidential candidate or vice presidential candidate.”

Describing his latest appearance in the county as more politically significant than his arrival years ago, Gonquoi said his presence was now “even much more presidential.”

However, the EFFL leader did not disclose whether he intends to contest for the presidency, vice presidency, or another elected position in 2029.

His declaration comes as Liberia’s political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the next general and presidential elections, expected in 2029.
