Former Chief Justice Musu-Scott Rebukes LNBA for Statement on Speaker Koffa’s Ruling

Monrovia, Liberia–In a piercing critique during the Liberian National Bar Association’s (LNBA) annual Law Day celebration, former Chief Justice of Liberia, Cllr. Glorious Musu-Scott, openly rebuked the Bar for what she described as a poorly timed and politically sensitive statement concerning a Bill of Information filed by House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.

Addressing legal professionals and public officials at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Oldest Congo Town, Cllr. Musu-Scott cautioned the Bar to exercise greater discretion in moments of political tension.

“The Bar must be conscious of the circumstances and know when to say what,” she stated, urging neutrality and restraint.

Cllr. Musu-Scott made these remarks when she served as the keynote speaker of 2025 Law Day program celebrated under the theme “Justice, Accountability, and Inclusion: Building a Stronger Liberia under the Rule of Law.”

She said at such a critical moment in the country, statement from the LNBA must be measured, neutral, and in the interest of the interest of the rule of law.

“At such a critical moment in our national life, statements from the Bar must be measured, neutral, and in the interest of the rule of law,” she asserted.

Her comments come in response to a recent LNBA position widely viewed by legal experts as sympathetic to Speaker Koffa’s controversial Bill of Information.

The Speaker, who is facing growing political and legal scrutiny, has sparked debate over the constitutional weight and intent behind the filing.

While the LNBA maintains that its intervention was rooted in legal merit, Cllr. Musu-Scott warned that the Bar’s perceived alignment with any political figure could endanger its credibility.

“The independence and integrity of the Bar should not be compromised by political undercurrents. Any perception of bias threatens to erode public confidence in the legal system,” she emphasized.

Several lawyers present at the event voiced similar concerns, with some describing the Bar’s statement as “premature” and lacking in contextual clarity.

The incident has ignited broader discussion within the legal community about the LNBA’s role in navigating politically charged legal matters.

Cllr. Musu-Scott’s remarks serve as a sharp reminder of the legal profession’s responsibility to uphold objectivity and safeguard the rule of law.
