LINSU Condemns Suspension of Student Leaders at Tubman University

The Liberia National Students’ Union (LINSU) has vehemently condemned the suspension of 14 student leaders by the Administration of William V. S. Tubman University in Maryland County, describing the move as an unjust, arbitrary, and oppressive attack on students’ fundamental rights. In a press statement issued on Thursday, December 5, 2024, and signed by Secretary-General Darius S. Toweh Jr. and President James Tactician Gbelee Washington, LINSU decried the suspension as a violation of the Constitution of Liberia and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as a betrayal of the university’s duty to foster intellectual growth and democratic values.

LINSU emphasized that the suspension represents an assault on students’ rights to freedom of expression, political participation, and academic freedom. According to the Union, the decision appears to be a calculated effort to stifle dissent and intimidate students, undermining the university’s role as a space for constructive dialogue and advocacy.

“The action by the university is an abuse of administrative power aimed at silencing student voices. Tubman University should be a safe environment where students can engage freely in political discourse and activism without fear of reprisal,” LINSU’s statement read.

The Union further criticized the administration for allowing student political activities but simultaneously placing sanctions on student political parties, which they deemed illogical and unjust. The lack of transparency and due process in the suspensions has raised alarms among LINSU, which views the decision as setting a dangerous precedent for treating student activists and protecting democratic values within Liberia’s academic institutions.

LINSU is demanding the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the suspended students, a public apology from the university’s administration, and the establishment of an independent investigative committee to review the circumstances surrounding the suspensions. The Union has also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the Administration of Tubman University to reverse the decision or face potential nationwide resistance.

“If the administration fails to comply with our demands, we will mobilize national and international stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Justice, civil society organizations, and the international community to defend students’ rights and democratic principles,” LINSU warned.

The statement concluded with LINSU reaffirming its unwavering commitment to defending the rights and dignity of every Liberian student. The Union vowed to resist any attempts to stifle student voices under the guise of administrative authority, stating that such actions are an affront to the entire student movement in Liberia.
