Tensions have escalated in Lofa County after the body of 19-year-old Yakpawolo Moisemai was found dead in police custody. Moisemai, who had been arrested in connection with a murder investigation, was discovered lifeless in his cell under mysterious circumstances, igniting outrage among local residents, particularly in Duwoigomai town, where the alleged crime occurred.
Moisemai was taken into custody as a prime suspect in the murder of 45-year-old Moyoungor Keleko, whose body was found on New Year’s Eve along a farm road in Voinjama District. Police quickly responded to the scene, and a 15-member jury was assembled to investigate. The jury’s findings indicated signs of foul play, including deep cuts on Keleko’s hands and a broken neck, pointing to a violent death.
In the wake of the discovery, Moisemai was one of five individuals arrested in connection with the crime. Authorities decided to isolate him from the other suspects to prevent interference with his testimony. However, reports later emerged that Moisemai was found dead in his cell, with initial unverified claims suggesting a possible suicide.
The official account states that he was rushed to Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body was subsequently placed in the hospital’s mortuary.
The incident has sparked protests in Duwoigomai, where residents are demanding clarity regarding the circumstances of Moisemai’s death. The unrest spread to Voinjama, where an angry crowd set fire to the Magisterial Court in John’s Town, further heightening tensions in the region.
Locals are calling for a thorough investigation, fearing that the death of the suspect could undermine the ongoing inquiry into Keleko’s murder.
Authorities are under growing pressure to address the public’s concerns and manage the volatile situation. While the investigation into Keleko’s death continues, the suspicious circumstances surrounding Moisemai’s death have only added to the complexity of the case, leaving both local residents and officials searching for answers.
