Pres. Boakai Pays Condolence Visit to the Home of Former First Lady Nancy Doe

Monrovia, Liberia–President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has paid a solemn visit to the residence of the late deceased first lady Madam Nancy Ghanyea Bohn Doe in Sinkor, Monrovia, to offer heartfelt condolences to the Doe family.

Madam Doe, widow of former President Samuel Kanyon Doe, passed away on May 21, 2025, after a prolonged illness at the age of 76.

Accompanied by senior government officials, including members of the Cabinet and Executive Mansion staff, President Boakai expressed the nation’s collective sorrow and extended sympathies on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia.

He described Madam Doe as “a motherly figure whose dignity in the face of adversity inspired many Liberians,” emphasizing her grace, resilience, and quiet contributions during a turbulent period in the nation’s history.

“History must remember all of its children,” President Boakai stated, underscoring the importance of honoring individuals who have played significant roles in Liberia’s national journey, regardless of era or political alignment.

Madam Nancy Doe served as First Lady from 1980 to 1990, during which she established a national market women’s association and advocated for educational opportunities for Liberian students.

Her legacy includes the Nancy B. Doe Market in Jorkpeh Town, Sinkor, and her efforts to establish scholarship opportunities for Liberian students at Chicago State University.

In recent years, Madam Doe sought justice for the denial of access to her late husband’s bank accounts. In 2019, the ECOWAS Court of Justice ruled in her favor, ordering the Government of Liberia to pay over $18 million in compensation.

However, as of 2020, the government had not complied with the court’s decision.

The Government of Liberia continues to engage with the Doe family to ensure a dignified celebration of Madam Nancy Doe’s life and legacy.
