A town hall meeting held in St. John, District #3C, Grand Bassa County, has concluded with renewed calls for greater women’s participation in leadership and decision-making roles in Liberia.
The event, sponsored by IBSA (India, Brazil, and South Africa), forms part of a nationwide dialogue focused on gender quotas and electoral reform.
Speaking on Sunday, April 19, Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karngar Lawrence encouraged more than 600 women in attendance to recognize leadership as a fundamental right and actively pursue political participation. She noted that women in Liberia outnumber men and, with increased engagement in the electoral process, could secure more positions at all levels of governance.
Senator Lawrence further urged women to work closely with men to achieve at least 50% representation in electoral and leadership spaces.
She cautioned that without stronger collaboration and support, women already in legislative roles could face challenges in retaining or securing seats, which could weaken female representation in national decision-making bodies.
