Senator Snowe Fires Back at Government Over “Malicious” Accusations

Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., a prominent member of the Liberian Senate and head of Liberia’s delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament, has issued a strongly worded response to what he described as “unfounded and malicious” accusations levied against him by the Government of Liberia.

In a press statement released on May 25, 2025, Senator Snowe expressed profound disappointment over claims made by the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, which he says falsely attributed inflammatory remarks to him aimed at destabilizing the government. The Senator, who is currently on official assignment in Sweden with ECOWAS, denounced the accusations as politically motivated and entirely baseless.

“I CATEGORICALLY REJECT AND CONDEMN THESE ALLEGATIONS AS ENTIRELY BASELESS, MALICIOUS, AND POLITICALLY MOTIVATED,” Snowe declared. He emphasized that at no time has he made any statement that could be construed as inciting unrest or threatening the country’s democratic framework.

Snowe argued that the accusations are part of a broader effort to damage his reputation and discredit his integrity as a statesman and representative of the Liberian people. He described the government’s statement as not only defamatory but also a violation of democratic principles and constitutional rights.

In a dramatic turn, the Senator announced that he is terminating his participation in the ECOWAS Parliament mission and returning to Liberia immediately. He has officially informed the Liberian Senate of his decision and requested a full, independent investigation into the matter.

“The statement by the government threatens the very fabric of our democracy,” Snowe warned, labeling the incident as part of a “calculated and malicious smear campaign” intended to silence him and other critical voices in the opposition.

He also called on international bodies—including ECOWAS, the African Union, the United Nations, and the European Union—to monitor what he described as an emerging pattern of political intimidation and persecution in Liberia.

Despite the controversy, Senator Snowe reaffirmed his commitment to democracy, good governance, and the right of Liberians to express themselves without fear.
